Violent Acts Against Whaling Ships to Protect Whales: Piracy?

Excerpt:

Piracy has been a high profile issue in the shipping community in the last few years as a result of piracy activity off the coasts of Somalia and western Africa where ships and crew have been held hostage until a ransom is paid. Piracy can also take other forms as demonstrated in a recent decision of a United States court. The decision provides an interesting discussion of the law of piracy in the context of environmental activists’ efforts to disrupt Japanese whalers’ activities in Antarctic waters.
